New Traffic Patterns Coming to the Penn Street Bridge
Penn Street Bridge – Crews have been getting equipment on-site and cleaning up sidewalks as well as installing erosion and sedimentation controls. Lane closures will not occur until the Buttonwood Bridge reopens around April 2017. The project to repair the bridge is expected to be completed sometime in December 2019. During construction, the bridge will remain open but there will be lane restrictions (1 lane inbound, 2 lanes outbound). Additionally, the ramp from westbound US 422 (West Shore Bypass) to Penn St. (downtown Reading) will be closed and detoured for the duration of the project.
Buttonwood Street Bridge – Berks County began experiencing bridge rehabilitation on July 21, 2015. All lanes and sidewalks on the bridge will remain closed during the estimated two-year construction period. When reopened (estimated April 2017) there will be no restrictions on use.
Please Consider: car-pooling, possible staggered start and end times. During the entire closure and construction period, left turns from Penn Avenue onto 3rd and 4th Avenues in West Reading will be prohibited to accommodate two thru lanes into West Reading.
